Biomedical Engineering Research Group

The Biomedical Engineering Research Group (BERG) of the University of Stellenbosch works closely with industry partners to take biomedical device concepts through the development phases into working prototypes.  The research group focuses on the following areas within Biomedical Engineering:  Biosignal processing; Instrumentation, Sensors, and Measurement; Biomechanics; Information Technology in biomedicine; Robotics in Surgery; Telemedicine. A project being co-funded by Acorn is a Non-invasive Haemoglobin Meter, which is designed to non-invasively and accurately determine the haemoglobin (Hb) concentration in blood. The intended use is for screening, tele-medical and home use, as well as monitoring of the Hb in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) patients and patients undergoing surgery where significant blood loss is possible.
